I went down to the Arts Festival on Thursday, after class, in search of a piece of art that really caught my eye. I walked almost the whole strip and I couldn’t find anything I really liked. Don’t get me wrong; there were so many beautiful pieces, but none that I really loved. There were amazing photographs, painting, drawings, wood works, pottery, and many more different types of art. After almost walking through the entire row of tents I saw Luis Enrique Gutierrez’s booth and his pottery. I looked around at his pieces, but the one I really liked was presented in the back and it was one of his biggest pots. The detail, shapes, and colors really caught my eye just while I was walking by. The closer I got to the piece, I saw how detailed it really was. There are so many tiny lines and dots of color and I could not see until I got really close up. It was clear from looking at the piece that Luis Enrique spent a very long time and put in a lot of hard work to make this pot, and the rest of his pottery. His other pieces looked somewhat the same; they were all pots with colorful designs. However, when I looked closely, I saw how different each piece really was with the different small details.
Luis Enrique told me that he creates these pieces because his whole family are Nicoyan Indian potters, so he has been doing pottery his entire life. His entire family has a huge passion for pottery and he followed in his family’s footsteps with almost 4 generations of potters. Luis Enrique is from Nicaragua, but now lives in North Carolina where he owns an art studio where he still practices art today. His art is both traditional and modern because it is traditional pottery, but he adds bright colors and geometric shapes, making it more modern. He wants to bring the two together to make new pieces people may not have seen before. He does these pieces because pottery is what he has always done, however he wants to make it somewhat different and modern with the bight colors and geometric shapes and lines.
