Devon Barthold- Arts Fest

After walking through all the booths at art fest I struggled to find a piece that grabbed my attention. There were many pieces that were amazing, but nothing that completely stopped me dead in my tracks. After walking past all of the tents, my sister and I decided to turn around and go back through them, but eventually my mind just kept going back to this piece that seems pretty simple. But to me a great piece of artwork doesn’t need to be bright and colorful, sometimes simple is better. This piece by Jennifer Cherpock looks flawless, she spends many hours making her beautiful pieces of art. Her pieces remind me of the water and it just brought me back to my childhood, I used to go swimming every weekend with my family. I think that is why my mind kept going back to it. All of her pieces had similar qualities to it, but the one I photographed kept calling my attention. The piece I photographed has the same shape as a piece we have in our house, I have always loved that piece and it reminds me a lot of it! I love how the lines flow around the piece, it draws your eyes around the piece. She also had some other pieces that were really cool, she had some that had some cute sayings on them. But this piece grabbed my attention the most. I took ceramics in high school and my pieces were never as clean as hers are. I absolutely love how these pieces are smooth and don’t have corners, I like pieces that are rounder, they just flow better.
After talking to Jennifer about her pieces, I learned that she didn’t always picture herself sculpting pottery. She originally went to school for business, but on the weekends, she took art classes and she tried all different types of art. From painting to drawing, but the second she tried ceramics she fell in love it. She started out just making her pottery and selling it on the side while working in an office. Slowly she started selling them more and more and eventually it turned into her career. Jennifer told me that she realized that ceramics was her true calling when she kept coming back to it. She said that is how she learned to believe in that, if you are truly destined to do something, you will continually be brought back to it no matter what.
