During my
experience at arts fest over the course of this weekend, I met a wonderful
artist named Amy Gmelin, who travelled to State College from New Port Richey,
Florida to display her work. I walked past several tents, but it was Amy’s
unique and intriguing sculptures that captured my attention and gave me the
inclination to photograph her work. Her sculptures typically entail a
vase-sized base typically with a sturdy marble material for support. Her work
typically varies in price, costing anywhere from $200 - $800 a sculpture. In
the case of my photograph, the viewer is presented with a fake, potted plant as
the subject. At its base, a mysterious fog gives the illusion of flotation.
After asking a few questions, Amy revealed that the tree is supported by a
thin, load-bearing wire that is invisible in the fog. In the hollow center of
the base lies the fog machine. Amy also mentioned that she originally intended
to major in photography when I spoke with her, but found a niche in sculpting
overtime.
