Kathy Ryan
As I explored the library looking for pieces that caught my eye and really intrigued me I came across Kathy Ryan’s book “Office Romance”. Kathy Ryan’s photography in that book really caught my eye because of her ability to capture the essence of light and shadows casted in her pieces. The title of her book also intrigued me and as I read more I realized she had created these photos during her daily routine in her office building with coworkers she loved in New York City.
Her interest in photography and art began when she was about nine at school in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Kathy Ryan later studied art and art history at Rutgers University. Kathy Ryan became very known for her photography through Instagram where she often posted her photographs she captured in the office.
Her photos were mostly casted during her daily routine in her office building on the sixth floor in the New York Times building. She works as a photographer for the New York Times Magazine. She has worked as head of photography for this magazine since 1987.She was recognized in the National Magazine Awards in 2011 and 2012. Kathy also received the Royal Photographic Society's annual award for Outstanding Service to Photography.[4]Kathy also serves as a mentor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City giving lectures in photography.
Her photographs are of everything she loves from her building. She states, “Some photographers like to photograph something they don’t like at all — exposing something dark in the world that needs to be fixed. I like photographing something I love.” This quote means a lot to me because I like how she photographs what she wants and what makes her happy.
I enjoyed the piece she shot particularly on page 40 in her book. The photograph is a view of the city during a rainfall. This piece captured a mixture of light and darkness. The lights from the city and the office buildings appeared in the lower and righthand side of the picture as the dark clouds are captured on the left and top part of the shot. This image has a good contrast between light and darkness which I find very interesting.
