Last Saturday, I attended Penn State’s famous, annual Artfest. This was my very first artfest, so I had to keep an open mind and see what it had in store for me. When I was little, I used to love drawing and painting. However, I’m not a huge fan of going and viewing other people’s work. I didn’t think that any of the booths would impress me or make me change my mind. I had no I idea that I would visit three booths that would blow that assumption straight out of the water.
The first booth that I visited was that of Jake Johnson. Johnson booth was filled with different pottery that caught my eye. The unique part of his art is that most of the vases had long, narrow, and wiggly necks. Another aspect of his art is that he uses lines and dashes that resembles that of nature. Johnson has been doing this sort of artwork since college. That means it has almost been 20 years now. I liked his art because I used to enjoy doing pottery in high school and his work was extraordinary.
The second booth I went to was that of man, Stevotomic. The reason I went to his booth is because his art was just amazing. From a distance it looks like the art is two dimensional. As I got closer, his art was three dimensional. The angles on the art was amazing all his art is made out of steel. I was thinking how hard that would be just looking at the shapes that he made. Steve focused on doing mid-century modern art. He has been doing this art for over 30 years. I asked him what drawed him to do something so cool and he just replied, “ It was a calling to do so”. The guy was just too cool for school
Last, but not least, was Nathan Carrol. Carrol specialized in acrylic painting. He was suggested to me by my friends and I did not regret the suggestion. Carrol is both a great painter and a funny guy. He has been painting for 9 years. The process in which he makes his art is amazing. He sketches what he wants to paint in black and white. When he gets home, he can paint whatever colors he wants in replace of what was actually there. This results in intriguing colors schemes in his nature paintings. The best part of his paintings was the way he names them. He literally names them after what people say when they come to artfest. One of them was called “ The Big One” because somebody came in and said, “ Hey, look at the big one”. There were many more like that title
Overall, I enjoyed my very first Artfest. There were plenty of good food and many wonderful pieces of art. I didn’t think that I would enjoy off all it. Now that I went, I’m glad I did.
