When reading the article, I just had to stop and ask myself why am I so obsessed with social media? Why use it? Why do I have a selfie case that is made so your selfies can have the perfect lighting? Why do I even take selfies? Social Media has become a medium for us to just compete with each other to see who has the best life and is the most “happy”. The line that stood out to me the most is one page 12, “Mass media also attempts to hide any elements that would open the text up to multiple meanings—the meaning pre-sented by mass media is the only “correct” meaning. This mean-ing elucidates stereotypes and unrealistic representations, and suchvisual formations only represent the shell of a trope.” Mass Media is so dumbed down and now just gets across one super simple message. Also no matter what the message is, it becomes twisted. I have personally always loved “showing off” what I do on instagram, before coming to college I was like “WOW, my insta this summer is gonna be so sick”, but being here now, I’ve just been enjoying my time, and haven't posted one instagram picture. I realized the memories I’m making and time I’m spending is so much more than some likes on a meaningless instagram picture with no meaning behind it. I wish everyone can just put their phones down and step back and genuinely enjoy life.
Reading the article, the discussion of selfies destroying the self portrait came up. This made me think do much, I love taking selfies, I take them all the time. But all through high school when it came time to do self portraits I dreaded it. I asked myself why? I genuinely think that it’s just because that’s what I’m used to. Reading this point in the article I just couldn’t agree more, self portraits are usually beautiful and have such a deeper meaning, where a selfie was a quick pic that has a backstory, but overall it’s just another selfie.
Overall I really enjoyed this article. It made me really step back and think about myself in many different ways. I asked myself so many questions throughout reading this. I think that the meaning of photography was kinda lost in the world of smartphones. Everyone thinks now just because they take some cool sunset pictures they’re a photographer. Reading this article totally backed up my theory on that.
