Natalie Schield - Final project proposal

Final Proposal Idea:

We go through every day without stopping to appreciate what is around us. A simple thing we passed on the sidewalk, or the color of the flowers around us. Our faces are too occupied in our phones, viewing someone’s selfie or vacation spot. Our surroundings are fascinating and are not nearly as appreciated as that should be. I have stopped appreciating nature through Instagram and Facebook, and recently I have found myself taking pictures of little things I have seen on my daily travels to class. While walking around campus, I have stopped to appreciate the manmade features of Earth’s surface, or natural markings and carvings into the Earth. Through the arboretum and on the paths around Penn State’s campus, I have seen cracks in the surface of rocks and pavement that lead to another visual. Cracks in wood give features that not every other piece of wood has. These simple patterns and textures give its object a uniqueness and make it mesmerizing.
For my final project, I propose to take 200 pictures around campus of the most unique marks, either naturally made or man-made, and display the best 12. These pictures will replicate the natural beauty Penn State offers and create a strong message between the viewers and the photograph. These photos will show that small things we believe have no beauty or gift to them, have so much character. This will be a different visual we are not using to looking at for a very long time. If we break apart these pictures we may be able to see the meaning of the design or the simplicity of the crack and how well it creates a visual.
