Emma Kollmar - Museum
I really liked this painting "Sky Burial" by Julie Hefernan because when I first looked at it I was reminded of a scene from a fairytale or adventure story. It reminded me of reading a book when I was younger and imagining really cool magical scenes and wishing I could be that character and go on adventures and live in a cool tree house in a magical world like the characters did. It reminded me of a scene from a fantasy world different from ours. This painting appealed to me because I used to read lots of books when I was little that took place in fantasy worlds. The tree house is in the center of the painting with twisted branches going in all directions across the whole painting. On either side of the tree house the background is all lit up and looks really bright. There are leaves on the branches all around the sides and top of the painting. I think the twisted and curves branches make it seem more like fantasy because not many trees look like that in real life. They don’t have huge curved branches perfect for building a house around in real life. It is also not everyday that you walk past a house in a tree. There is a little red bucket hanging from one of the branches and it reminded me of a kids tree house or just kids playing in general. It seemed to me like it was a pulley kind of system where someone lowers the rope attached to the bucket down for someone else to put something in and then the person in the house pulls the rope, and the bucket, now carrying something, is easily lifted back up. I used to do that with my neighbors and siblings up in my swing set when I was younger. I think the location of this painting helps it be seen because it’s in a big open room where it’s easy to spot, but I also think the location isn’t the best because all the paintings around it look very similar so it could get lost within the other paintings or jumbled together with them when viewing all the paintings in the room. Or, all the paintings being similar could also help to give this painting a more whimsical feel because all the paintings in the room give off that vibe. I also thought it was cool that the painting has a very different meaning than what it meant to me when I looked at it.
