Emma Holland- Final Proposal

For my final project, I plan to submit 10-12 final images that deal with the process of transitioning or the concept of a transition. Although it is different for everyone, we all just went through a significant transition of our life. Some people moved from across the country and others are directly coming from State College, but either way we are all adjusting and transitioning into what our life will be like for four years. 

I want to project this idea as my final project because of my own personal experience with transition. I've gone through simple transitions, like riding the bus to driving myself to school, and more impactful, serious ones, like losing a person I love. I want to represent all of these transitions into my photographs. My own transition to Penn State, which is probably the biggest influence in this project idea, considering how recent and significant it is, is obviously still in the process. We are only six weeks in, the process may not be done, but it has gotten a whole lot easier. At the start, I would go through phases and lots of mood swings. Most of the time, I'd feel great, excited for my day and my new surroundings. Sometimes, though, I'd feel emotional or very far away, even though I am really only two and a half hours from home. I missed everyone I love strongly and the relationships I have had for years. And I will continue to miss them whenever I am away, but everyday it gets easier and I become more self-aware and independent. I look to my college transition in a positive light too of course, because of new people, classes that are specific to my interests, and lots of coffee. My point is, I know how much emotion can come from a transition, and I want to use it as inspiration for this final project. 

I will accomplish this project through planning images, but also recognizing a symbol of transitioning when I come across some in my day. I plan to create 10-12 separate yet consistent images that carry the same theme and feel. To ensure my images show connection and to emphasize subjects, I may make my images monochrome using Adobe Photoshop. I will take my camera out and walk around State College, using my current environment for these images. Pictures will be made up of both natural and man-made subjects.
