Elizabeth Skinner Library Book
This is my favorite picture Henry Wessel created in his monograph called "California and the West". Wessel started his studies at the Pennsylvania state university and receiving his bachelors. After that he attended State University of New York at Buffalo/Visual Studies Workshop obtaining his graduate degree of master of fine arts. Wessel is well known for his unique photos of the human environment. His first solo addition was at the museum of modern art in New York, New York, and has been starred in many places since.
This photograph on page 29 of "California and the West". I think this photo appeals to me the most because I like the woman taking a relaxing bask in the sun like their is much on her mind but she doesn't want to focus on those aspects now. I also like the architecture and topography in the background. I believe this two aspects tell much about the more barren side of California life and when you escape from the cities. In 2016 I visited California, rented a van and drove from north to south exploiting the whole state with my best friends family. I would say this photo explained most of the life outside of the hustle and bustle city. The bare atmosphere with people just hanging out not much to be running around to do, the environment is relaxed and that is why this photo appealed to me the most because it reminds me if the middle class experience I got to talk to the locals about and how they enjoy their area like it appears the woman is doing.
