Devon Barthold- Photo Research Project- Peter Bialobrzeski

This is my favorite photograph by Peter Bialobrzeski, this photo grabbed my attention the second I saw it. The city seemed so alive even though it is night time, I love how the majority of the photograph is dark and then at the last 1/3rdof the photograph is bright. I think that contrast in color really grabs the attention of the viewer. I also really like how it seems very fogy near the top half of the photograph it makes it seem kind of ominous. It’s cool how Peter was able to capture the movement of objects in the foreground, it created lines that go throughout the roads of this city.

After researching a bit about Peter Bialobrzeski, I learned that he was born in Wolfsburg, West Germany in 1961. He is a photography professor at the University of the Arts Bremen in Germany. He didn’t set out to be a photographer, at first he studied politics and sociology in Germany but then he ended up going to a different university to study photography. A lot of his pieces are of cities and I think he does a really good job at that. All of them are unique and are very pleasing to the eye. I don’t think there is one photograph in this book that doesn’t have something that grabs my eyes.

I really like the way that Bialobrzeski captures movement within his pieces. It seems like he sets his camera on a tripod and then uses a really long shutter speed to capture the movement of objects within the cameras field of view. The buildings in his pieces seem to almost pop out of the photographs. The backgrounds seem almost fake to how real the buildings seem. I love how bright the colors are in his photographs, I wonder how he is able to capture them as such vibrant colors. It’s really cool that most of his photographs are of cities yet all of them are different.

Each picture is extremely unique and even though they have similar subject matter, they all look different and read differently to the viewer. I get a different feeling from each one, some of them come off as sad while others seem happy and upbeat! Overall, I would definitely recommend Peter Bialobrzeski’s work to people, his pieces are beautiful and are definitely pleasing to the human eye.

I actually checked out two books, the second book I got also had some unique photographs in it as well, but my mind kept going back to the cities that Bialobrzeski photographed.
