I walked all of Arts Fest multiple times, so much amazing work that captured my eyes and attention. While waiting online to get ice cream the girl in front of me was covered in henna. I was so amazed at the detail and beauty of the designs. I questioned myself, do I say something or just get my ice cream and go on with life? Well, I stepped out of my comfort zone and told her that I was obsessed with her henna tattoos. After talking for awhile I learned that she is actually a henna artist and does all the work herself. I was amazed! Her name is Teeny, shes a student at Penn State. She’s 18 but currently a senior here at PSU because she started college classes at 15.
We ended up at Saints Cafe (adorable place, you should 100% check it out) were she pulled out a henna cone and started to pipe designs on my hand. She told me how she got into henna because she wanted tattoos but not ones that lasted a lifetime. She said she fell in love with the art of henna and it became almost an addiction. She calls herself the Happy Valley Henna Artist. She said that it’s like doodling in class. She continued to say that most people who ask, are actually testing out potential tattoo ideas. “The first time I used henna on myself I did a full sleeve and my dad thought it was a real tattoo, I was 15”. Teeny is a true artist.
I was hesitant to use this for this project, I expected to be writing about an artist who paints, sculpts, draws, etc. To me henna is just as much of an art. The art of putting designs onto people, I find body art so amazing and beautiful. I love the idea of putting a design onto your body, I personally thinks it the best way of expression. Henna is a tradition that has been being used for hundreds of years.
I’m so happy I ran into Teeny while waiting for Ice Cream this weekend, it lead to me getting a sick henna tattoo, a new friends and the chance to sit down with someone and hear their story about how they got into their art form. Truly an amazing experience and I’m so glad we got this project.
Also… Teeny has an instagram page where she posts all her work it’s @henna.babe
